Celebrate the festival of Holi by serving the Saints

"Today, I am celebrating the festival of Phalgun. Joining with God's companions, I have begun to play. I celebrate the festival of Holi by serving the Saints. I am imbued with the deep crimson color of the Lord's Divine Love. || 2 || My mind and body have blossomed forth, in utter, incomparable beauty. They do not dry out in either sunshine or shade; they flourish in all seasons. It is always springtime, when I meet with the Divine Guru. || 3 || The wish-fulfilling Elysian Tree has sprouted and grown. It bears flowers and fruits, jewels of all sorts. I am satisfied and fulfilled, singing the Glorious Praises of the Lord. Servant Nanak meditates on the Lord, Har, Har, Har. || 4 || 1 ||" Shri Guru Granth Sahib Ji  (Page 1180)

Hola Mohalla or Hola Mahalla or simply Hola is a Sikh festival that takes place on the first of the lunar month of Chet which usually falls in March. This, by a tradition established by Guru Gobind Singh, follows the Hindu festival of Holi by one day; Hola is the masculine form of the feminine sounding Holi.

The word "Mohalla" is derived from the Arabic root hal (alighting, descending) and is a Punjabi word that implies an organized procession in the form of an army column. But unlike Holi, when people playfully sprinkle colored powder, dry or mixed in water, on each other, the Guru made Hola Mohalla an occasion for the Sikhs to demonstrate their martial skills in simulated battles.

Together the words "Hola Mohalla" stands for "mock fight". During this festival, processions are organised in the form of army type columns accompanied by war-drums and standard-bearers and proceeding to a given spot or moving in state from one gurdwara to another. The custom originated in the time of Guru Gobind Singh who held the first such mock fight event at Anandpur in February 1701.

Sikh judge Sir Mota Singh criticises banning of Kirpan

Sikhs should be allowed to wear their ceremonial daggers - known as Kirpans - to school and other public places, Britain's first Asian judge has said.

There have been a number of cases of Sikhs being refused entry to venues because they wear the Kirpan or other religious artefacts.
Sir Mota Singh QC, who is retired, has criticised schools over the issue.
"Not allowing someone who is baptised to wear a Kirpan is not right," Sir Mota told BBC Asian Network.

'No objection'
Last year, a Sikh police officer, who had been told to remove his turban during riot training, won a discrimination case against Greater Manchester Police.
A schoolboy was also banned from wearing his Kirpan at the Compton School in Barnet, north London.
And, in 2008, 14-year-old Sarika Singh won a High Court case against her school after it excluded her for breaking its "no jewellery" rule for wearing a Kara (steel bangle), which is another symbol of Sikh faith.
The school was found guilty of indirect discrimination under race relations and equality laws.
"I see no objection to a young Sikh girl or boy, who's been baptised, being allowed to wear their Kirpan if that's what they want to do," said Sir Mota, who received a knighthood in the 2010 New Year Honours list.
"I wear my Kirpan and I've always worn it for the last 35 to 40 years, even when I was sitting in court or visiting public buildings, including Buckingham Palace."
Sir Mota, who is now retired, added: "I think these are issues that can be dealt with with a certain amount of sensitivity.
"It is the right of every young girl and boy to be educated at the school of their choice. For him or her to be refused admission on that sort of ground, as far as I'm concerned, is quite wrong.
"It ought not to happen but it does. I think it's wrong to be discriminated against for that reason."
The Compton School offered the boy the option of wearing a smaller knife, welded into a metal sheath, but his parents refused and withdrew him - an action by the family that Sir Mota said he supported.
He later told BBC Radio 4's Today programme: "But on the other hand, I am also conscious of the health and safety position.
"I accept that, because I think as one realises the increase in crimes of violence involving the use of knives and other offensive weapons, I can see that.
"But there has been no reported case, certainly none that I know of, of a Sikh using a knife in order to cause injury."

'Worn discreetly'
Asked about the possibility of substituting a smaller knife in place of the traditional Kirpan, the judge said that might be an option for debate between school and Sikh authorities.
But he told Today: "It's a little more than ceremonial. It's a requirement of the religion."

There have been problems for Sikhs going to tourist attractions
Dabinderjit Singh Adviser to Sikh Federation UK

In Sikhism, the Kirpan and Kara are two of the five "articles of faith" that must be carried at all times by baptised Sikhs.
The others are Kesh (unshorn hair), Kara, Kanga (comb) and Kacha (special underwear).
The Kirpan is carried in a sheath attached to a cloth belt. It is normally worn discreetly under clothes and most people would be unaware that a person was carrying one.
Guidelines from the department for Children, Schools and Families indicate it is up to individual governing bodies to make their own policy on the carrying of the Kirpan, and if challenged, it would then be up to the courts.
Dabinderjit Singh is an adviser to the Sikh Federation UK and he says he regularly receives calls from worried Sikh parents whose children have been prevented from wearing the Kirpan at school and in public areas.
Although Sikhs carrying the Kirpan are exempt from prosecution under the offensive weapons act, Mr Singh believes objections about the ceremonial dagger have increased following the September 11 attacks and instances of knife crime.
"There have been problems for Sikhs going to tourist attractions," he explained. "Part of it is education.
"We're actually working with the government to introduce a code of practice which would then be used to educate people in the security industry so they are aware of the different articles of faith," Mr Singh told the BBC Asian Network.
Campaign groups such as United Sikhs and the Sikh Federation UK have welcomed Sir Mota's comments over issues which the judge himself has not had to encounter during his career.

'No eyebrows raised'
Sir Mota was raised in Nairobi, Kenya, before coming to England in 1954 in order complete his studies in law.
He joined the English bar in 1967 and made headlines with his appointment to the bench in 1982 when he wore a white turban in court instead of a wig.
"The fact that I'm a Sikh matters more to me than anything else," he said.
"If, for instance, when I was appointed the suggestion had been made that I could not appear unless I wore a wig and discarded my turban, I would have refused.
"I would have said I would not accept the appointment, but the question never arose and no judicial eyebrows were raised at all."

'I Heart Turbans': Sikh student's apparel designs spark inter-faith dialogue

If the spheres of fashion and religion seem disparate and distant, it is 22-year-old Jagmeet Sethi's Connecticut-based apparel company TurbanInc that has brought the two seemingly distinct worlds together.

"The power of fashion is universal and when we dress ourselves, we often think, 'What am I saying to the world when they look at me today?'" said Sethi. "With that in mind, we wanted to combine one of our most routine methods of expression with confidence, self-love and pride in being Sikh."

Born and raised in Queens, New York, Sethi, who was among the 500,000 Sikhs then living in the United States, was consistently the mistaken target of discrimination stemming from the lack of knowledge and ensuing confusion of Sikhs with Muslims or Arabs. That confusion is what ultimately led to the death of Balbir Singh Sodhi, a Sikh who was the first person believed to have been murdered in retaliation for the 9/11 attacks. More than a decade later, in December, another bloody assault on a 56-year-old Sikh preacher in Fresno confirmed that the group remains a mistaken target of anti-Muslim sentiment in the United States.

"Kids who were once best friends of mine all of a sudden stopped talking to me right after the attacks took place," said Sethi. "There was a period of time where I was getting into physical fights with classmates of mine almost every week."

Although much of the prejudice settled when Sethi's family moved to Connecticut in 2004, his outward display of faith, first through the topknot in middle school and then the full size turban later in high school drew judgment well through college, where during his senior year Sethi wore an "I Heart Turbans" T-shirt that his then budding company had designed. Created to invite classmates to engage with his appearance, Sethi spent much of that day explaining his religious background, practices and rituals to friends, professors and hallway strangers.

"I wanted to create something that would invite kids to start a discussion about my religion with me," said Sethi, who has since designed more than 25 T-shirts and dozens of accessories with similar statements aimed at sparking a much-needed dialogue about Sikhism. In 2008 Sethi created his original design, "Bhangra Evolution," which he took to the annual New York City Sikh Parade and sold 250 shirts within a couple of hours, indication that there was a real demand for his product, and more broadly his message. Last year, the 3-person company-with partners Jasjeet Singh and Karandeep Singh-turned its first profit.

But Sethi's message was too little too late for some American Sikhs who succumbed to pressures of blending in rather than standing out. Even in the culturally diverse city of Los Angeles, some like 56-year-old Sarinder Singh, owner of the popular mid-city East India Grill feel more at ease without the identifiable turban and beard.

"It just became easier for me to live my day-to-day life without fear of judgment, without the fear of something much worse than judgment that some have had to endure," said Singh. "The adjustment may have taken some time, but I think in the end it was the right choice."

That choice is also being made half way across the world in India, where Sethi discovered that the majority of his Sikh friends and relatives had not only stopped donning many of their objects of faith, but had grown unaware of the practices and rituals associated with Sikhism.

"It's such a huge culture shock each time I go back to India to visit my friends and family because I expect Sikhs living in India to be more educated about our religion," he said. "Instead, I feel like I know more and in some ways have an easier time preserving my identity and background, which is strange to admit considering my teenage experiences of being Sikh in the States."

Although the Sikh turbans and beards were first abandoned by large numbers in the aftermath of the anti-Sikh uprisings that erupted following the 1984 assassination of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, millennials with no personal memories or ties to the anti-Sikh pogroms of the 1980s often point to Western fashion influence as the main reasons they have given up outwardly identifying themselves as Sikh.

Still, Sethi hopes that his company will help young Sikhs in the States and eventually also those in India embrace their religious background and engage openly with Sikhism.

Says Sethi of his future goals for the company, "One of my dreams is to run into someone I don't know, outside of Connecticut who isn't Indian or Punjabi wearing one of my designs. I'll know I've really contributed to efforts around religious tolerance once I see that."

"Salam Jabalpur"

A documentary Salam Jabalpur is based on historic demolition of Temples, Mazars, Mosques, churches & other religious places which were built on roads & obstructing the traffic of Jabalpur City.
These worship places were also becoming the cause of road accidents. Though the step of demolition was taken in pursuance of the verdict of M.P. high court but the Citizens played the remarkable roll in whole process. They shifted the idols of the their deities & came forward for all sorts of cooperation to the local administration. Entire country could not solve a dispute of Ayodhya sofar but citizens of Jabalpur Scarified the hundreds of worship places for welfare of humanity.

Jabalpur gave the message to the entire world that god can not be pleased if their devotees are not safe.
This documentary is based on this noble message of Jabalpur.

Special train to 5 Sikh takhts leaves on Baisakhi

New Delhi, March 1

If you want to visit Sikhs’ five sacred ‘takhts’ in Punjab, Bihar and Maharashtra in one go, board a special pilgrimage train from Amritsar on Baisakhi, April 13.

After showing the first ‘takht’ at the Golden Temple in Amritsar, the 12-day spiritual journey in a 244-passenger Rajdhani-style train will take the pilgrims to four other ‘takhts’ — Anandpur Sahib (near Ropar, Punjab), Damdama Sahib (near Bathinda, Punjab), Patna Sahib (in Bihar), and Hazur Sahib (in Nanded, Maharashtra).

In between, the passengers will visit Delhi, Gwalior and Agra for other historical gurdwaras and monuments. It is a joint initiative of the Indian Railways Catering and Tourism Corporation and Punjab Tourism.

Last year, a similar train was operated on an experimental basis with “luxury fares”. This time, the entire journey will cost much less — Rs 1.55 lakh (Ist AC), Rs 1.25 lakh (IInd AC), and Rs 85,000 (IIIrd AC). The tariff includes food, hotel stay and sightseeing. The train has been revived to accommodate the common man. It will carry 72 (Ist AC), 138 (IInd AC) and 34 (IIIrd AC) passengers.

After the April run, the train is likely to be operated once a month from September-October. “We want to provide Sikh, Punjabi and other communities the best of Punjab and gurdwara yatras,” says Sajivve Trehen, a tour operator, who has got the franchise to run the train.
The passengers will be asked to reach Amritsar on April 12 for boarding the train next day. The first day will be devoted to a tour of the holy city, including the Jallianwala Bagh Ranjit Panorama. In the evening, they will also witness a 45-minute “Change of Guards” ceremony at the India-Pakistan border at Wagah. The day will end with a visit to the first “takht” at the Golden Temple — the Akal Takht.

On Baisakhi, the train will leave for the second “takht” at Anandpur Sahib. Known as “Sri Keshgarh Sahib”, this “takht’ was founded in 1665 by Guru Tegh Bahadur.
The pilgrims will also visit “Guru Ka Lahore” where the marriage of Guru Gobind Singh with Jeet Kaur took place in 1734. The passengers will then visit “Virasat-e-Khalsa”-the heritage museum. They will also visit Sri Keshgarh Sahib gurdwara for seeing Guru Gobind Singh’s weapons. It is the birthplace of Khalsa. The most precious of the weapons is “Khanda”-a double-edged sword-used by the Guru to prepare ‘amrit’ (nectar) used in the first Khalsa initiation ceremony.
On the third day, the pilgrims will be in Bathinda to visit the third “takht”-Damdama Sahib where Guru Gobind Singh took nine-month refuge during his battles with the Mughals, and worked on the “Adi Granth”.

The train will arrive at the Safdarjung railway station in Delhi on the fourth day. The yatra will start with Sisganj Gurdwara at Chandni Chowk. It was built at the place where Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb beheaded the ninth Guru Tegh Bahadur in 1675.
From Chandni Chowk, the pilgrims will move to see Gurdwara Bangla Sahib with a gold-plated dome. Eighth Sikh guru, Harkishen Dev, had stayed there in 1664. The passengers will also be shown the Parliament House, the Rashtrapati Bhawan and the India Gate. On the fifth day, the train will move on for “takht” Sri Patna Sahib in Patna. This is the birthplace of Guru Gobind Singh.

In the evening, the train will leave for Nanded (Maharashtra) and will reach there next morning. The yatra will start with a visit to “takht” Sachkhand Sri Hazur Sahib where Guru Gobind Singh held his camp in 1708 after the departure of the Emperor Bahadur Shah Zafar.
This shrine was erected exactly where he had pitched his tent, in which he was convalescing after being attacked by assailants. This is where he and his horse “Dilbag” breathed last. In the evening, the pilgrims will be shown a laser show on Sikh history.

On the eighth day (April 18), the pilgrims will get another chance to visit “takht” Hazur Sahib before catching the train for Gwalior. On April 19, they will visit the Gwalior fort and Data Bandi Chorh Sahib gurdwara. The train will depart on its last leg of the journey back to Amritsar from Agra on April 20.

Indian Army chief

Lieutenant General Bikram Singh to be the next Army chief

New Delhi: Ending the suspense, Government today announced the appointment of Lieutenant General Bikram Singh as the next Army Chief from May 31 to succeed General V K Singh.

59-year-old Lieutenant General Singh, the Eastern Army Commander, will head the 13-lakh strong force and have a tenure of just over two years till August 2014.

"Lieutenant General Singh has been designated as the next Chief of Army Staff, in the rank of General, with effect from the afternoon of 31 May 2012," Defence Ministry spokesperson Sitanshu Kar said here.

"He will succeed the present COAS General V K Singh, who retires from the service on May 31," he added.

As per the normal practice, the appointment of Chiefs of Defence Services is announced 60 days in advance but in this case, the government made the announcement 90 days in advance.

"I am honoured and grateful to the government for having reposed confidence in me and having appointed me as the next Chief of Army Staff," said Lieutenant General Singh in a statement this evening.

Lieutenant General Bikram Singh was the senior most among the present Army Commanders but his appointment as the Chief of Army Staff had got caught in a suspense as General V K Singh was fighting out his date of birth battle that would have given him tenure till April next year.

There had been questions over Lieutenant General Bikram Singh in connection with an alleged fake encounter in Kashmir but the government went ahead to appoint him as the Army Chief.

General V K Singh, who had two dates of birth in his official records, had dragged the government to the Supreme Court, contending that he was born on May 10, 1951 and not a year earlier.

However, the top court refused to accept his contention, holding that he had taken promotions on the basis of May 10,1950 as his date of birth and could not "resile" on his commitment accepting that date.
